The Mission Minimize

A proposal from The Harriet Hancock Community Center, in conjunction with the City of Columbia, through the

’08-’09 Community Promotions Grant to launch a campaign entitled “My PRIDE Color is GREEN” on topics of

recycling, conservation, and sustainability.

The Mission:

“My PRIDE Color is Green” seeks to engage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender citizens of Columbia to

recycle, conserve, and support sustainability. Specific programs include the following topics: Water

Conservation, Energy Conservation, Waste Reduction & Recycling, and Pollution Prevention, Organic Products,

Alternative Energy, and other Eco-friendly topics. This campaign will follow three phases:

Phase ONE:

The Harriet Hancock Community Center to submit application to the City of Columbia

to join the City of Columbia Green Business Program and implement specific goals for

Water Conservation, Energy Conservation, Waste Reduction & Recycling, and Pollution Prevention.

The Center, in conjunction with the SC Pride Movement will launch the www.scpride.org/GREEN website with

information on the latest events of the initiative.

Phase TWO:

The Harriet Hancock Community Center to provide reusable cups for drinks at SC Pride Festival in Finlay Park

as a sponsorship of SC Pride 2008.

Last year, police estimated 4,500 people attended the SC Pride 2007 Festival & Parade. With an estimate 6,000

to attend this year’s festival, the Harriet Hancock Community Center wishes to ensure that there is not a

negative impact on the park and the community cause by the influx of visitors.

To that end, the Center plans to purchase 2,500 17oz cups to donate to SC Pride 2008 to ensure that visitors

reuse their cups for sodas & beer instead of asking for a fresh up each time. With the potential for 10,000

drinks sold that day, this could save the City a significant amount of waste. Approximate cost: $2000

Phase THREE:

The Harriet Hancock Community Center to further “My PRIDE Color is GREEN” initiative throughout the 2008-09

fiscal year with additional programs and promotions to be determined.

This project was unanimously adopted by the Board of Directors on August 24, 2008
